Asiago awarded with the 2019 Winter Triathlon World Championships

ITU is pleased to announce that the 2019 Winter Triathlon World Championships will be held in the Italian town of Asiago, in the heart of the Alps, on February 9 and 10.

The races will be contested in the Centro di Fondo Campolongo, in Altopiano di Asiago, one of the most fascinating areas in the Venetian mountains. With an average altitude of 1500 meters, the snow arrives abundantly every winter, and is the perfect location for competitions and training of cross-country ski, mountain bike and trail running, all around magnificent forests.

“I am really glad to return to the Alps for the 2019 Winter Triathlon World Championships, and Asiago seems just like the perfect venue for this, with a mix of great facilities, lots of snow, and a convenient location which I’m sure will help to attract not only the elite winter triathletes from all over the world, but also the upcoming stars of the sport, the para athletes and age groupers”, said ITU president and IOC member, Marisol Casado.

“With the continuous support of the Italian Federation, always contributing to hosting high-quality winter events, and the local organising committee, I’m positive that the winter version of our sport will continue growing, with more events coming and the number of participants constantly increasing”, she added.

Winter triathlon is one of the newest events on ITU’s calendar, with elite athletes going usually for approximately 8 km run on the snow, 14 km of MTB also on the snow and 12 km of cross-country skiing. Distances for the 2019 World Championships will be announced shortly, according to local conditions and the ITU competition rules.  In addition to the Elite World Championship, Asiago will welcome Under23, Junior, Paratriathlon and Age Group athletes to vie for a chance at becoming the next World Champion in their respective divisions.

The trails of the Altopiano di Asiago go through a magical and suggestive scenery that also allows the visitants also discover some historical sites where these mountains witnessed the tragic events of the Great War between 1915 and 1918, and wander around a spectacular scenery that opens along a carousel of paths of more than 100 kilometers, perfect for training all legs of winter triathlon.
