ITU Technical Officials Community Course in Suriname

Twenty six participants from Suriname, Trinidad & Tobago, Peru and Brazil took part in the 2012 Paramaribo ITU Event Organizers and Technical Officials’ Community Level Seminar in Suriname from 1 to 3 June.

The course, facilitated by Roberto Menescal ITU International Technical Official and Gustavo Svane, PATCO Continental Coordinator began with a practice event, teaching participants about TO skills in triathlon, duathlon and aquathlon.


The participants from a variety of sports ranging from triathlon to swimming and cycling, enthusiastically working on the training exercises which were alternated with theoretical and practical tests for each segment.

Activities took place at the Oase Paramaribo sports complex and included event starts practices, awards ceremony rehearsal, training of each segment and transition set up offering valuable experience. The skills were put into practice on the final day, as a successful duathlon event was held with 50 athletes.

As the Suriname Triathlon Union (STU) continues to work on the development of the sport in the country, this activity was regarded as very important for the growth of ITU triathlon. Caroll Heuvel, STU President was very pleased with the work so far, and took the commitment to continue working to include Suriname in the international circuit.

Triathlon sports academy workshop

On Sunday after the duathlon competition, the course conductors developed an extra activity on triathlon with students from the Paramaribo Regional Academy of Sport.

The activity was scheduled by the STU as part of the academic training and had an attendance of 30 members.

A participatory discussion on the generalities of the sport was conducted, where students had the opportunity to learn about and experience triathlon.
