ITU, the first IF to partner with the CAS Anti-Doping Agency
15 March 2019
The International Triathlon Union, as the governing body of the sport of triathlon, has become the first International Federation to partner with the newly created Anti-Doping Division of the Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS).
With this agreement, ITU agrees to delegate its first-instance authority to adjudicate alleged anti-doping rule violations and any sanctions, guaranteeing even more independence in all anti-doping related cases.
Mr. Ivo Eusebio, Retired Judge of the Swiss Federal Tribunal and President of the CAS Anti-Doping Division, noted: “The CAS ADD is honoured to have been entrusted with handling the first-instance adjudication of alleged anti-doping rule violations, including any sanctions, arising under the ITU’s Anti-Doping Rules. We will work tirelessly to provide the ITU and its athletes with efficient and cost-effective resolution to any anti-doping disputes.”
This independent division of CAS has been established to hear and decide anti-doping cases as a first instance authority upon written delegation of powers from the International Olympic Committee, International Federations, International Testing Agency and any other signatories of the World Anti-Doping Code.
“It is a really important move for ITU not only to guarantee the independence in all decisions related with anti-doping violations, but also to be the first International Federation to sign the agreement with this new division, paving the path for all other institutions to reinforce the fight for clean sport”, said Antonio Fernandez Arimany, ITU Secretary General.
John Coates, President of the ICAS, added: “By taking this step the ITU is complimenting the investigative and prosecutorial role of the Independent Testing Authority with the independent adjudicatory function of the CAS ADD. This separation of powers is critical to a fair hearing. The ITU is to be congratulated for recognizing this.”
