Tri with a cause

In the fourth installment of our “Looking Back on 2010” video feature series, we highlight a feature from the Hy-Vee Elite Cup held this year in West Des Moines, Iowa.

Meet Paige Champion - one of roughly 500 kids in the United States who have a rare neurological disease commonly known as A-T.  For Paige, participating in the Hy-Vee Age Group triathlon would have been an impossible task were it not for ultra-marathoner Tim Borland.

Borland made headlines back in 2007 for running 63 marathons in 63 days, all in an effort to raise awareness for the A-T Children’s Project. This weekend, Borland is set to pull and push Paige through the Hy-Vee Age Group triathlon for the very same reason.  The move from marathons to triathlon was set into motion after Borland met American elite triathlete Hunter Kemper through the A-T Children’s Project.

And it won’t stop here, as Borland’s sights will likely set on a new horizon for bringing awareness to a disease that combines all the symptoms of cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and cystic fibrosis into one.

And as for Paige…well, she has always known what it took to be a champion – it’s her last name, after all – but after swimming, biking and running with Borland, perhaps the word champion has taken on a whole new meaning.
