One week to deadline for Tokyo 2020 Tripartite Invitation Places

The 17 January 2020 marks the closing date of applications for the Tripartite Invitation Places that offer smaller NOCs the opportunity to be represented at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

A total of 16 sports are eligible for Invitation Places within the Athletes’ Quota. Two places per gender are available to ITU member National Federations, who should contact their National Olympic Committees for application. To be eligible, athletes must be among the top 180 in the ITU World Ranking on 11 May 2020.

ITU Development has been working closely with those National Federations potentially eligible, along with their athletes and coaches, to further support small and developing nations. It is well embedded in the ASICS World Triathlon Team strategy and support, with further mentoring programmes assigned to both athletes and their coaches. At Rio 2016, Lawrence Fanous was awarded such a place, becoming the first Jordanian triathlete to compete at an Olympic Games.

List of eligible ITU member NFs:

Africa (35):
Burundi, Benin, Botswana, Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Gambia, Guinea, Libya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Niger, Rwanda, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Zambia.

America (17):

Europe (9):

The IOC Tripartite Commission will confirm, in writing, the allocation of invitation places to the relevant NOCs after 11 May. If the Tripartite Commission is not able to allocate an Invitation Place, it will be reallocated to the next highest-ranked NOC, according to the ITU Olympic Qualification Ranking, respecting the maximum number of athletes per NOC.
