SD reaches Africa and Asia
BG-ITU Sport Development has had a busy week, traveling to both Tunisia in North Africa and Kazakhstan in central Asia, not to mention the Philippines, for National Triathlon Training Camps for over 40 developing athletes and coaches from the two regions.
The Tunisia camp began on July 7th with 20 athletes from the SAFX Triathlon Club and will run through July 15th. The camp is being hosted in Sfax which is also the home of the BG Group headquarters in Tunisia. Participants, attending this camp, are training under the supervision of ITU Sport Development Coaches from Tunisia and Luc Morin of Canada, who was the appointed ITU head coach for this course. This camp follows the initial visit by Ned Wills (BG Group) and Libby Burrell (ITU Sport Development) earlier this year and is one of several opportunities being offered to triathlon in Tunisia in the coming year. Tunisia is one of the youngest members of ITU and the first North African country to join the international federation.
The Kazakhstan training camp, which began on July 1st, was held in the beautiful mountain town of Burabay, and ended today. This camp was organised and run with the support of BG-Kazakhstan .The main target of that camp was developing and making a triathlon more popular in the Asian Region. Athletes from Mongolia, Syria, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan all took apart in this training camp. The sessions were run by Kazakhstan coaches Solovyev Yuriy and Solovyeva Tatyana, who have both coached past Asian champions. They were assisted by 2000 Sydney Olympian Mikhail Kuznetsov. Coaches from Mongolia, Syria and Uzbekistan were also present to instruct and learn from each other. Athletes who attended this camp will compete this weekend in the upcoming 2007 Burabay ITU Triathlon Asian Cup.
