Triathlon action scheduled for first day of competition at Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games

Birmingham 2022 has released the latest version of the competition schedule for next year’s Commonwealth Games, which represents the biggest multi-sport event to be staged in the UK for a decade. The sporting action will start in style on Friday 29 July, with medal sessions on the first day confirmed for swimming, track cycling, gymnastics and triathlon. The para triathlon racing will be held, along with the Mixed Relay, on Sunday 31 July.

As in previous edition of the Commonwealth Games, the triathlon competition will include the Individual Elite Men and Women’s races over the sprint distance and the Mixed Relay, all taking place in the magnificent Sutton Park venue.

After Para triathlon made its Commonwealth debut in Gold Coast 2018 with great success, the 2022 edition will see visually impaired triathletes also competing for the medals in Birmingham, also over the sprint distance in Sutton Park.

Last year, the Commonwealth organisers confirmed that in 2022, more medals will be awarded to women than to men for the first time ever at a major multi-sport event. Sunday 7 August will be a true showcase for women’s team sport in particular, with the medal matches for women’s hockey, cricket T20 and netball all taking place on the same day.

The new schedule, which has been finalised following detailed conversations with Games Partners, International Federations and broadcasters, has been added to the Birmingham 2022 website, with a dedicated new section allowing eager sports fans to start planning their visit to England’s West Midlands for the Games.

The 2022 Commonwealth Games will showcase 19 different sports and a total of 283 medal events, the biggest ever programme in the history of the Games. Two full weekends of sport will include more para sport than ever before and highlight the strength of women’s sport.

The final day of competition will be held on Monday 8 August, when gold medals will be awarded in diving, table tennis, badminton, squash and hockey. The ceremonies team will be most in demand on Tuesday 2 August - when nine sports will award medals - and Sunday 7 August - when the medallists in eleven different sports will be decided.
