Triathlon comes home to Vancouver

The 2007 Vancouver BG Triathlon World Cup officially announced its arrival to the city of Vancouver after a successful public launch at English Bay, just off the race course.  Many came out and braved the heavy rains to show their support as Vancouver will host a World Cup race for the first time since 1991.

Top Canadian triathletes came out to help celebrate the return of triathlon to Vancouver including Lauren Groves, the top ranked Canadian woman from 2006, and reigning junior World Champion Kirsten Sweetland.  They spoke to the students from King George Secondary and Lord Roberts Elementary who were in attendance to get them excited about triathlons return to Vancouver.

Were absolutely thrilled that Vancouvers going to be hosting this event, its not everyday that we get to race on our home soil.  In the past when the Vancouver triathlon has taken place on the same course, its been my favourite race.  We often travel the world and dont get the chance to race the local races at home so now that this is a major race, well definitely be here, said Groves.

We get to bring the worlds best back home to here, we get to show off triathlon to you guys and hopefully we can show off this beautiful city to the rest of the world and have everyone come back for the world championships, said Sweetland.

They also joked about how Vancouvers typical spring weather of rain may help them during the race.

Were actually hoping secretly that the weather will be like this today. I think well have a home course advantage and the Australians and Kiwis, they wont know what hit them! said Groves.

Competing at home is an element of the race that especially motivates them and something both are thrilled about.  The city, the people and the weather arent the only advantages for Vancouver native Groves.

Im excited to sleep in my own bed for a World Cup, when does that ever happen? said Groves.

One of the many benefits of hosting an international sports event like a World Cup triathlon is that it allows people to get involved and inspires them to participate in sports.

Dr. Fry encouraged the communitys youth to be active by getting physical and moving.

The childrens triathlon and the various age-group categories is an excellent opportunity for the local youth to get active and challenge themselves.
