WADA 2009 Prohibited List
As of January 1st, 2009, ITU is bound by the WADA 2009 Prohibited List, which is an international standard that identifies Substances and Methods which are prohibited in-competition and out-of –competition.
The Prohibited List classifies substances and methods by categories such as steroids, stimulants, and gene doping. The use of a prohibited substance by an athlete for medical reasons is possible by virtue of a Therapeutic Use Exemption. Athletes must be aware of the contents of the 2009 Prohibited List as they are responsible for anything that is found in their bodies.
This list was first published in the early 1960s under the leadership of the IOC. WADA has been mandated by the WADA Code since 2004 to be responsible for the preparation and publication of the Prohibited List.
