Statement regarding the absence of Triathlon at the Commonwealth Games

World Triathlon is disappointed to learn that Triathlon will not be included in the sport programme for the 2026 Commonwealth Games that will take place in Glasgow. The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has communicated to World Triathlon that the decision not to include triathlon in the 2026 sports programme does not impact or set a precedent on the sport’s position in future Games and there will be the opportunity for sports to return for future editions.

According to the CGF, the 2026 concept has been developed on a core offering of 10 sports, and they have been working hard to balance flexibility for the host city, with an approach that supports athletes and sports over the long term and excites fans.

They understand that any reduction in the sports programme for the 2026 Games will be disappointing for some sports. World Triathlon will continue to work in close cooperation with the Commonwealth Games Federation and the local organising committees to return to the programme in future editions.

World Triathlon strongly believes that triathlon is the best sport to showcase cities and venues, as has happened before at Olympics and Commonwealth Games.

Triathlon has been part of the programme of the Commonwealth Games since 2002, and has been held in each edition since, except in Delhi 2010, due to the lack of suitable venue for swimming.
